BIO

Over the past 25 years, Bruges-based photographer Frieke Janssens (1980) has earned a reputation for surreal, staged scenes and group portraits, often based on a specific concept. Her work expresses an endless fascination for humanity in its infinite variety. Similar to an oil painter’s careful layers, she builds up every image in painstaking detail. This refined, austere beauty is what first attracts viewers to her work. Studied more closely, you begin to notice far more layers of meaning than you might have first assumed – it’s as if the subjects she portrays are trying to tell you something. In recent years, Frieke Janssens has had work on display in New York, Chicago, London, Bilbao – and in Belgium, of course.
