Originally from Peru, Giannina Urmeneta Ottiker studied photography and painting in Lima, Barcelona, and Ghent. In the latter city, she started her professional career as in-house photographer at the arts centre VIERNULVIER. Since then, Ottiker has participated in a string of group exhibitions both at home and abroad, and earlier this year the photographer even landed a solo exhibition in Ghent at Cecilia Jaime Gallery. Two years ago, she was also selected for the exhibition Unknown Masterpieces at the Scharpoord arts centre in Knokke-Heist.
Giannina Urmeneta Ottiker depicts characters, still lifes and landscapes that are almost invariably bathed in mystery. The photographer is mesmerised by a specific darkness. Her images evoke a compelling silence as they seek an equally ambiguous and fragile balance between clarity and obscurity. Concurrently, she conducts an investigation into the subtleties of texture and colour, dragging the viewer into a world between fiction and reality.
