Jan Pypers (1982) explores the boundaries between film, photography and sculpture. He builds meticulously crafted scale models, records them on film and then destroys them. All that is left of this laborious process is a photograph that evokes the illusion of a genuine landscape. His work has a clear cinematic flavour and is inspired by directors such as Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson and Tim Burton. Carefully staged scenes seem to suggest that something is about to happen, yet the logic behind them is difficult to grasp. Viewers are invited to interpret for themselves what they are seeing, similar to the experience of awakening from a dream. Jan's work has been exhibited in various countries and he gained international acclaim in 2024 when he was named a Hasselblad Master.
