Starting out as an art director at communication agencies, Stefano Bonazzi nowadays creates photographs inspired by surrealist art. The self-taught artist has a penchant for digital photography and he does not shy away from extensive photo editing. Bonazzi usually starts from a traditional, simple image and uses a variety of techniques to turn it into a psychedelic or even apocalyptic fairy tale. As a rule, the result is as surreal as it is disorienting.
The Italian artist’s characters are filled with anxiety. Dealing with others has exhausted them. They live withdrawn in a grey world with a white sky as the most pristine canvas. They prefer the soft grey to the blinding colours of contemporary nothingness. Grey is static. Grey is tranquillity. Grey is the calmness of the mother’s womb that warms and shelters. In this inhospitable world, without a past, the mask covers all emotions.
