Jenny Ymker

Jenny Ymker employs herself as a model. Often with a suitcase in hand, she travels the world. Or at least the world of her imagination. Her work is not so much feminine as made from a female point of view. And the ‘character’ in it may seem lost, lost in an unmerciful environment, but if the Dutch artist wants to tell us anything, it is that she can lean on her imagination to stay on course and turn loneliness into strength.

Man’s loneliness is a recurring theme in Jenny Ymker’s work, which has a great affinity with absurdism. The absurd is part of life for the Dutch photographer. As in the standoff between the individual man with his aspirations and the rest of the world that, basically, cares little or nothing about him. For Ymker, herein lies the absurdity of life – perfectly.
